Artemis stands out as one of the most revered goddesses in Ancient Greek mythology. Her Roman counterpart is Diana. Many scholars suggest that both her name and identity originated before the time of the Greeks. Homer describes her as Artemis Agrotera, Potnia Theron: "a fierce protector of the wildland, a powerful ruler over all creatures". The people of Arcadia believe she was Demeter's daughter.
