Aristogeiton and his lover Harmodius earned eternal fame as Tyrannicides after they brutally murdered Peisistratid tyrant Hipparchus, making them the ultimate icons of democracy in ancient Athens. Aristogeiton's legendary status was amplified by the fact that he endured extreme torture before his death, yet refused to betray his fellow conspirators. Following the implementation of democracy, numerous statues were erected in his honor, with this Roman copy from an original Athenian work crafted between 477-476 B.C. serving as a lasting testament to his heroism.
