Statue of Apollo (the so-called Omphalos)

The sculpture is a replica of the original work by Kalamis, erected in the temple of the Athenian Agora between 470-460 BC, following the plague that the god was believed to have driven away. A Roman creation from the late 1st to early 2nd century CE, it was inspired by a Greek bronze statue created by Kalamis around 370-360 BCE. Kalamis' statues were characterized by their flexibility and diversity in subject matter. He primarily worked with bronze and created an Apollo Alexikakos (Averter of Evil) that stood in the Athenian Agora. The artistic versatility of Kalamis is reminiscent of the skills possessed by the renowned artists of the Archaic period, who excelled in working with gold, ivory, marble, and especially bronze.
