Apollo Citharoedus stands proudly before us, his cithara in hand. A Citharoedus or Citharede is simply another name for a depiction of Apollo grasping a lyre. In Greek and Roman mythology, Apollo is one of the most powerful and intriguing gods on Mount Olympus. He embodies the perfect image of a kouros - a strong, athletic youth with no beard. People often regard Apollo as a god who watches over music, truth, prophecy, healing, sunshine, poetry, and even plagues. Born to Zeus and Leto, Apollo has a twin sister named Artemis, a devoted huntress known for her purity and restraint. This particular statue was unearthed in the Gymnasium of Salamis.
