Statue of Apollo Citharoedus

myminifactory

Late Roman replica mimicking the Greek original from the late fifth century BC, unearthed on Via Orazio in 1887. A majestic Apollo Citharoedus, or Apollo Citharede, emerges as a statue or iconic image of Apollo grasping a cithara (lyre). The most renowned examples showcase the colossal marble statue by an anonymous Roman sculptor from the 2nd century AD. Apollo is depicted wearing a laurel crown and donning the long, flowing robe characteristic of the Ionic bard. The colossal statue was discovered in 1774 among seven statues of the Muses in the ruins of Gaius Cassius Longinus' villa near Tivoli, Italy. These magnificent sculptures are preserved in the Hall of the Muses within the Museo Pio-Clementino of the Vatican Museums.
