Statue of Aphrodite

This sculpture portrays Aphrodite, a revered Ancient Greek deity synonymous with love, beauty, and passion. As the Roman equivalent, Venus, she possessed an irresistible allure that effortlessly enticed both gods and mortals into illicit trysts with her captivating looks and whispered seductive phrases. In ancient mythology, the goddess was born when Cronos severed his father Uranus' genitals and cast them into the sea, from which Aphrodite emerged amidst the resulting foam (aphros). Believed to have been conceived near Cyprus, she was enthusiastically worshipped in Paphos on the island, a geographical location that hints at her Eastern origins as a fertility goddess and possible evolution from the Phoenician deity Astarte. This sculpture was unearthed within the Gymnasium of Salamis.
