The Statue of Aphrodite, crafted from Parian marble and unearthed in Baiai, southern Italy, boasts a storied past. Once part of Lord Hope's esteemed collection, it was generously donated to the National Museum by M. Embeirikos in 1924. The Italian master sculptor A. Canova (1757-1822) painstakingly restored the neck, head, and right arm of this ancient masterpiece. Aphrodite is depicted standing proudly, unadorned except for a richly draped himation which she grasps with her left hand, modestly shielding her intimate areas. This replica, dating back to the 2nd century AD, is modeled after the iconic Syracuse Aphrodite, whose original version hails from the 4th century BC. This remarkable object forms part of "Scan The World," a groundbreaking initiative launched by MyMiniFactory, aimed at creating an extensive digital repository of fully printable sculptures, artworks, and landmarks from around the globe for public access. By contributing to Scan the World, enthusiasts can help build this open-source, community-driven archive; those with interesting items are encouraged to email stw@myminifactory.com to learn how they can participate.
