Statue of a woman, the so-called 'Pudicitia' type
myminifactory
A woman in this statue wears a long tunic that falls down to her ankles and a fringed cloak that covers her head and wraps around her figure from her shoulders to her knees. This statue represents the "Pudicitia" type, which is a central idea in ancient Roman sexual values. The term comes from 'pudor', a sense of shame that governed individual behavior as socially acceptable. In this context, Pudicitia was typically a defining characteristic of women, but men who failed to conform to masculine sexual norms were said to exhibit feminizing impudicitia, or a lack of sexual modesty. This plaster work is a replica of an original marble from the Severan period, likely discovered in Rome. The head has been adapted with a modern Roman style, while the original features a hairstyle similar to that typical of Julia Domna.
