This colossal statue was a majestic tribute to Poseidon, proudly displayed before his grand temple. Its awe-inspiring scale is a testament to the innovative flair of early Archaic sculptors for crafting gigantic statues that command attention. Throughout the sixth century B.C., Greek artists made significant strides in creating remarkably lifelike depictions of the human form. During this period, two dominant types of freestanding, large-scale sculptures emerged: the masculine kouros, a standing nude youth, and the feminine kore, a standing draped maiden. Erected in sacred sanctuaries and cemeteries just outside city walls, these massive stone statues served as devout dedications to the gods or as commemorative markers for the deceased. Athenian aristocrats frequently commissioned elaborate funerary monuments within the city limits and its surroundings, particularly for family members who had met an untimely demise. Such monuments also took the form of stelai, often adorned with intricate relief decorations.
