The magnificent kouros statue, crafted from gleaming Naxian marble, stood proudly in Athens, nestled near the bustling Kerameikos district. Originally, it would have towered atop a grave, its majestic presence commanding attention from passersby. Keramikos, also known by its Latinized form Ceramicus, is a thriving area of Athens, Greece, situated northwest of the iconic Acropolis. Spanning an extensive territory both within and outside ancient city walls, Keramikos boasts a unique blend of history and culture on both sides of the Dipylon Gate and along the banks of the Eridanos River. As the potters' quarter of the city, Keramikos is the birthplace of the English word "ceramic." This vibrant neighborhood was also home to an important cemetery and numerous funerary sculptures that line the road leading out of the city towards Eleusis.
