Statue-menhir, St Martins, Isles of Scilly

This prehistoric statue-menhir stands proudly in a secluded area of Chapel Down, situated on the island of St Martins within the Isles of Scilly. The "Archaeology of Scilly" guidebook currently refers to it as a "Celtic Idol." It is positioned directly in front of a chambered cairn, having been relocated here after its initial discovery in the 1940s and subsequent rediscovery in 1988. Some experts speculate that this statue-menhir could be a stone from a nearby stone row or a wheel-head cross from the adjacent medieval chapel. It's entirely possible that it serves as both. Dr Charles Thomas views it as a "worked idol" originating from the Romano-Celtic period, drawing parallels with similar structures found throughout Europe.
