The daughters of Nereus, a sea-deity, and Doris are known as Nereids. Between 50 and 100 in number, they were highly regarded figures in Greek literature. Believed to be personifications of ocean waves, the Nereids were considered benevolent toward humans. Among the most well-known Nereids were Amphitrite, wife of Poseidon; Thetis, consort of Peleus, king of the Myrmidons, and mother of Achilles; and Galatea. This figure is draped in a chiton, its folds animated by the rush of the sea breeze. A mantle falls over her left shoulder. She is carried along by a sea bird visible below the hem of her skirt. Her portrayal may suggest the means by which the soul of the deceased was transported to the afterlife. This object is part of "Scan The World".
