The building was originally constructed in 1896 as a B&O passenger train depot. As an official historic landmark, it has been listed on the National Register of Historic Places since 1976. In recognition of its historical significance, the project was designated a Save America's Treasures initiative in 2005. The New York Times commended MICA for acquiring and renovating the building, describing it as one of the country's pioneering adaptive reuses of an historic property. During its heyday as a train station, U.S. presidents such as Wilson, Coolidge, Hoover, FDR, and Eisenhower would frequently stop through on their way to or from Washington, D.C.
