Star Wars X-wing: 3-D asteroid bases

thingiverse

Dress up your X-wing miniatures game with three dimensional asteroids that add a whole new level of realism. The files included are the custom stands needed to mount your unique asteroids, available in two styles: one closely replicating the six different asteroid pieces from the original game for rules lawyers, and another featuring large, medium, small, and tiny sized circular bases. Once you print out the bases, it's time to create your asteroids. Don't bother 3D printing them; instead, use lava rocks commonly found in landscaping that can be easily sourced at mini-golf courses or Home Depot parking lots. These rocks are lighter than regular rocks, making them perfect for tabletop games as they won't tip over easily and can be drilled into without too much hassle. Every rock is unique, which adds to the realism of your game. Simply paint the rocks with the cheapest black spray paint available and drybrush them in progressively lighter shades of color. Try using dark gray -> light gray -> white for some asteroids and brown -> tan -> bone white for others - they'll look amazing with minimal effort. To attach the rocks to their stands, drill a 1/8" diameter hole into each rock and push it onto the stand. You can also snap off random lengths of each post to create a more dynamic tabletop scene where rocks appear to be floating at different heights. Happy gaming!
