In 2264, the Federation has only been in existence for a century, and members of allied alien races are just beginning to join Starfleet. At this time, the rules imposed on captains are fairly flexible, and they have fairly extensive decision-making powers. Despite warnings from the Vulcans, Earthlings are not always able to avoid culturally "contaminating" the new planets they discover. This is the era of "cowboy diplomacy", of which Captain Kirk is a prime example. Here's the Advanced/Elite version of the crew and Joh76's recommended settings: Advanced - you gain a chance to suffer wounds when defeated in combat. These wounds impair your performance until healed by a doctor or kit. Enemies are more difficult, but XP received and enemy falls are improved. The standard rewards you receive for handing in a mission are unchanged, however. Elite - The Elite setting is for the most difficult experience with greater rewards, but a much higher demand on your build (30-50k damage per second minimum depending on the TFO). The "Battle of Korfez" TFO is unique in that it's only available on Elite difficulty.
