A handheld medical scanner that made several appearances in Star Trek: The Next Generation was originally created from a modified outlet tester. The first version, built using reference photos based on measurements only of the plugs, set the stage for the scanner's development. The second version, constructed from more detailed and measured photographs of the original outlet tester, offered a more accurate representation of the prop. However, it did differ slightly from the actual device, with its "Soft" variant showcasing rounded corners reminiscent of the screen-used model, while the "sharp" version featured sharper edges like those found on the real outlet tester. The third and final iteration boasted even more detailed bottoms, complete with embossed text from the actual outlet tester. These upgrades were designed to be compatible with the V2 tops, allowing for a seamless integration between the two components.
