The hand-held directed-energy pistol, commonly referred to as the laser pistol, played a key role as a primary weapon for the United Federation of Planets during its early days in the 23rd century. Starfleet personnel operating in the 2250s and 2260s wielded laser pistols equipped with multiple power settings that enabled them to blast through solid objects like rocks, shatter security glass, and even disintegrate humanoid-sized androids. Furthermore, these advanced weapons could be set to overload mode, causing a catastrophic chamber explosion. By the late 2260s, however, these early laser pistols had largely been replaced by more modern technology, rendering them "old-fashioned" and obsolete.
