The handheld scanning device commonly used by Lieutenant Commander Trip Tucker to assess life forms and measure environmental parameters is widely known as a Tricorder in science fiction, not exactly but closely related, also often depicted in association with humanoid characters on board spaceships. The tricorder appears early within the 1966 original Star Trek series with Dr McCoy's use.
