This is a sphere constructed from 12 short cones. The geometric pattern is only 90 and 45° angles of rotation, surprisingly that creates a surface of alternating 6 pointed and 4 pointed stars.
The stars overlap, so that each specific finger belongs both to two different stars.

Constructed by accident, while testing patterns for 14 pointed and 12 pointed stars.

The sphere is 80mm in diameter, and has a wall thickness of ca 1mm.
There are two STL files for top and bottom half.
On the inside, there is a snap-in contour, so that the two halves can be seamlessly assembled by carefully squeezing and some wiggling.

star-ball-3x4-full.stl is a complete ball, just for reference, probably not printable with FDM printers.

Printable variant in 2 pieces:

star-ball-3x4-top-half.stl

star-ball-3x4-bottom-half.stl
They have a snap in around the equator but require much support in the center to support the poles. When using transparent material you'll get interesting texture and visual effects where the support meets the pieces. Actually quite nice looking. Printable variant in 4 pieces:

star-ball-3x4-top-ring.stl

star-ball-3x4-bottom-ring.stl

star-ball-3x4-cover.stl (2x) All pieces should nicely snap, use this variant to get smooth surfaces all around.
The cover pieces should be printed sideways, standing on one of the curves. Some support may be needed to stabize the pieces.

Category: Decor
