A colossal burial cairn, dating back to the Neolithic or Bronze Age, stands proudly at Stapness, near Walls in the Shetland Isles. The cairn stretches an impressive 32 meters across, and a possible circular planticrub, though ruined, lies precisely along the center line of the cairn. Further remnants of structures can be seen leaning against this crub. Heather growth conceals some areas of the cairn, yet cleverly highlights a central pathway or passageway leading directly to the crub, which may well conceal a burial chamber beneath. This site bears a striking resemblance to a heel cairn, albeit on an enormous scale. Located off the National Record of Historic Environment for Scotland, this site is, however, meticulously documented within the Shetlands Sites and Monuments Record (Reference: 2452). Grid coordinates pinpoint its exact location at HU2314748730. Captured through a lens on September 22, 2014, this remarkable site has been recreated in exquisite detail using Agisoft MetaShape by June 2020.
