Standing figure of Chicomecoatl at The British Museum, London

A prominent female deity takes shape in a standing figure surrounded by an imposing rectangular headdress called the 'amacalli,' or 'house of paper.' During harvest festivals, impersonators wore this distinctive headpiece, while figures holding maize cobs are thought to embody Chicomecoatl, goddess of corn and sustenance. The sheer number of these sculptures that have survived suggests mass production, potentially rendering them cult images for local temples and even family shrines. Like other Aztec sculptures, these figures show clear Gulf Coast influences.
