The SOM Missile System is a variant specifically designed for the F-35 Joint Strike Fighter's internal and external carriage. It targets highly defended and high-value stationary and moving surface targets as well as land-based threats. Weight: Approximately 1000 pounds. The missile features a semi-armored piercing warhead, allowing it to penetrate tough defenses with ease. Navigation systems include a Global Positioning System (GPS), an Inertial Navigation System (INS) for precision guidance, and Terrain Referenced Navigation (TRN) for optimal route planning. An Imaging Infrared (IIR) seeker enables the missile to detect and track targets effectively. Automatic Target Acquisition (ATA) ensures quick and accurate target engagement. The SOM Missile is also equipped with a Network Enabled Weapon (NEW) capability, allowing it to share targeting information in real-time. It features Universal Armament Interface (UAI) compatibility for seamless integration with various aircraft systems. Mission planning capabilities include off-board, on-board, and in-flight planning options, giving operators flexibility and control over each mission.
