This is my creative response to my International Relations project: “The abiding purpose of every nationalist is to secure more power and more prestige, not for himself but for the nation or other unit in which he has chosen to sink his own individuality.” George Orwell. Of the theorists we have studied, who would agree with Orwell and why? Creative Project Artists Statement Horatio Hamkins When George Orwell claimed that nationalists choose to give up their own individuality to benefit the nation, he could very well have been talking about Stalin's ideal citizen. This is explained in Stalin's article, "The Nation" when he says that “A nation is a historically constituted, stable community of people, formed on the basis of a common language, territory, economic life, and psychological makeup manifested in a common culture.” With my 3D printed pigs living in "Stalinville," I've tried to illustrate this as follows: The three pigs represent all the people of the nation, and they share all the characteristics which Stalin believes are necessary for a nation. The pigs all have a coin that represents common economic life, the Alinvillestay sign represents a common language (pig-latin), and a common territory because they all live in the same village. The bowl represents common cuisine, meaning they all have a common culture, and all of the pigs' expressions are the same too, which represents a common physiological makeup. In all, all of the pigs have given up their individuality. These pigs are arranged in a connected line, like the military, showing that they are achieving more power for the Nation of Alinvillestay through their unity, something Stalin says is necessary for a nation. These examples of characteristics Stalin argues necessary for a Nation are shown in the town of Alinvillestay, a unified nation with each individual sacrificing their own individuality to achieve power and prestige for their Nation. Note: I designed the entire project myself on the Onshape CAD software and printed it on my own 3D printer, the Ender 3.
