Climbing stairs takes up more energy and time than taking an elevator. Going upstairs involves stepping and pushing off with your feet against each floor's edge until you reach your destination on top. Stairs allow people to travel up or down using separate sets for descending versus ascending, but walking in reverse up them would make no sense since we always go down on the left side when climbing normally; there is even less chance because our brain isn't made to work against what its programmed!
