The Stahlhelm was originally produced by the German Empire before Austria-Hungary acquired the license to manufacture their own versions of this iconic helmet in 1916. The Royal Hungarian army, also known as the Magyar Királyi or Königlich-ungarisch, adopted the design and renamed it the Stahlhelm M17 in 1917.
