This is a stunning oak carving of seated St Peter resplendent in full papal attire, including an ornate tiara that commands attention. Originally, this iconic figure of St Peter grasped two keys, but one has been broken off, leaving only the restored companion to tell its story. According to the Gospel of Matthew, Jesus confers a profound honor upon Peter, declaring, "And I will give unto thee the keys of the kingdom of heaven." In medieval and Renaissance art, it was customary for St Peter to be depicted holding two keys, a testament to his esteemed role in Christian tradition. Jesus himself had chosen Peter as 'the rock' ('petra' in Latin), on which he would construct the church. Later, Peter emerged as the leader of the twelve apostles and the first pope, a legacy that continues to shape the course of Christianity today.
