St. Peter's Square is a spacious public area situated directly in front of St. Peter's Basilica within the Vatican City, a sovereign city-state located inside Rome. The square and basilica are both named after Saint Peter, an apostle of Jesus considered by Catholics to be the first Pope. A large Egyptian obelisk stands at the center of the square, erected in 1586 on the current site. Gian Lorenzo Bernini designed the square almost a century later, including massive Doric colonnades that enclose visitors in "the maternal arms of Mother Church." Two granite fountains were built by different artists: one was constructed by Bernini in 1675 and another by Carlo Maderno in 1613.
