St. Peter's Square is a gigantic public space situated directly in front of St. Peter's Basilica within the Vatican City, the papal enclave nestled inside Rome to the west of the Borgo neighborhood. Both the square and basilica are named after Saint Peter, an apostle of Jesus considered by Catholics to be the very first Pope. At the center of the square stands a historic Egyptian obelisk, erected at its current site in 1586. Nearly a century later, Gian Lorenzo Bernini designed the entire square, including the massive Doric colonnades, four columns deep, which wrap around visitors like "the nurturing arms of Mother Church." A granite fountain built by Bernini in 1675 matches another fountain created by Carlo Maderno in 1613. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/St._Peter%27s_Square
