St Pancras Old Church Hardy Tree

Thomas Hardy's path to becoming a renowned novelist and poet began with a different pursuit altogether - architecture. In the 1860s, he was responsible for overseeing the relocation of gravestones in the Old St. Pancras churchyard (London), making way for the Midland Railway line. The headstones were meticulously relocated around an ash tree that has since grown among the stones, creating a poignant and enduring testament to Hardy's early work.
