Emperor Maximian of Rome commanded that the entire legion be brutally massacred for their steadfast refusal to engage in atrocities against innocent Christians. This statue likely originated from an altarpiece. Typically, St Maurice is portrayed as a black saint, and it's possible that the face of this sculpture was originally painted a deep, rich black.
