St Mary's Church on Loch Cille Bhànnain
sketchfab
St Mary's Church rose from the ashes on South Uist in around 1732, marking a significant milestone for post-reformation Catholicism. Following Fr. Alexander Forrester's reappointment as parish priest, this historic landmark began to take shape. Its ruins stand out, with the main structure running south to north, a unique feature that sparks curiosity. While it's possible that the remaining walls were once part of a house rather than a church, an eerie extension stretches eastward, hinting at the presence of a former sacred space. Some speculate that components of this consecrated section were dismantled and reassembled when the church was rebuilt after the devastating fire of 1828, which prompted its relocation to Ardkenneth on the shores of Loch Bee.
