St. Martin of Tours

St. Martin of Tours, a renowned bishop, served in Tours, France, where his shrine became an iconic stop for pilgrims traveling along the road to Santiago de Compostela in Spain. As one of Christianity's most beloved saints, St. Martin is often revered as a military saint. Born in what is now Szombathely, Hungary, he spent his childhood in Pavia, Italy, and devoted much of his adult life to France. Consequently, he has become a unifying figure across Europe. A classic representation of St. Martin can be seen in the stained glass artwork on horseback wielding a sword as it divides its cloak in two, with one half given to a beggar standing beside the horse. Typically, this beggar is depicted barefoot and partially nude, although fully naked is rare in iconography.
