John spearheaded baptism as the cornerstone symbol or sacrament of his messianic movement. Most scholars concur that John baptized Jesus. Some scholars propose that Jesus was a disciple or follower of John, although this notion is hotly contested by John's own words in scripture. Several New Testament accounts indicate that some of Jesus' initial followers had previously been adherents of John. John the Baptist is also referenced by the Jewish historian Josephus.
