St John Nepomuk's legacy as a national saint of the Czech Republic remains unshaken. In 1393, King Wenceslaus IV of Bohemia orchestrated his brutal murder by tossing him off a bridge into the river Vltava below. As the confessor to the queen, St John Nepomuk had sworn secrecy and refused to disclose her intimate matters to her husband. A commemorative figure, crafted by one of Mainz's most renowned sculptors, now stands proudly on the bridge, inspired by an earlier 17th-century model.
