Saint Jerome was a Latin Christian priest, confessor, theologian, and historian born in Stridon on the border of Dalmatia and Pannonia as the son of Eusebius. He is renowned for translating most of the Bible into Latin, creating the Vulgate translation, and writing commentaries on the Gospels. His extensive list of writings showcases his intellectual prowess. As a protégé of Pope Damasus, who passed away in December 384, Jerome gained recognition for outlining a lifestyle suitable for Christians living in cosmopolitan cities like Rome. He focused particularly on the lives of women, advising them on how to live devotedly as followers of Jesus Christ. This emphasis stemmed from his close relationships with several prominent female ascetics from affluent Roman families. Jerome is celebrated as a saint by the Roman Catholic Church, Eastern Orthodox Churches, Lutheran Church, and the Anglican Communion. He is commemorated annually on September 30th with a memorial.
