St George and the Dragon flanked by the Dandolo arms

St George and the Dragon flanked by the Dandolo arms

These reliefs were originally set in the exterior wall of a house near the Ponte dei Baretteri, Venice, where they drew vivid descriptions from the renowned art critic John Ruskin (St Mark's Rest, 1877-84). He commended the reliefs for their "most consummate precision of artistic skill." Note how the strap of the stirrup and the delicatest line of the spur appear so lifelike - are they not made of leather and steel? His flying mantle seems to be silk rather than marble.
