St. Anne With the Virgin Mary and Christ Child at The Kiev Museum of Western and Oriental Art, Ukraine

The Madonna with Child and Saint Anne is a traditional subject in Christian art depicting Saint Anne embracing her daughter Mary, the Virgin Mother, and her grandson Jesus. This iconic image has been a staple of Germanic culture since the 14th century. Saint Anne's mystical connection to her daughter's immaculate conception is subtly conveyed through the framing of their tender moment. However, this should not be confused with Mary's perpetual virginity or Jesus' divine birth, which are distinct concepts rooted in Christian doctrine. Although the idea of Mary's immaculate conception has been widely accepted since ancient times, it wasn't formally declared until December 8, 1854, when Pope Pius IX issued his papal bull Ineffabilis Deus, defining it as a fundamental tenet of Western Catholicism. This dogma has never been explicitly adopted by Eastern churches.
