In Ballyvourney's Shanacloon Wood, a cairn of loosely-packed stones stands tall. Rising to a height of 0.9 meters, the cairn stretches 3.8 meters from north to south and 3.4 meters from east to west. Perched atop this ancient mound is a bullaun stone, identified as CO058-039003-. Locals have long referred to this site as St Abbán's grave, honoring the saint believed to be buried here. Three ogham stones flank the cairn on either side: CO058-039001-, CO058-039005-, and CO058-039006-. According to tradition, a fourth ogham stone once stood at this site, but its whereabouts are now unknown. On the northwestern edge of the cairn, quartzite stones have been carefully placed. This sacred spot remains in use today, adorned with a modern cross and recent devotional items. St Abbán is credited with founding Ballyvourney's nunnery for St Gobnait, as noted by Harbison in 1991 (136). The site can be explored further through the webgis.archaeology.ie/historicenvironment/ website. A cutting-edge 3D model of this site was created using photogrammetry techniques and processed with Agisoft PhotoScan. This intricate model is based on a staggering 68 images, each meticulously captured to ensure an accurate representation of Shanacloon Wood's ancient cairn.
