SS East Wales, built by W. Dobson & Co., Newcastle in 1915 and owned at the time of her loss by East Wales SS. Co., Ltd. (Gibbs & Co.), Cardiff, was a British steamer weighing in at a massive 4321 tons. On October 14th, 1917, East Wales, sailing from Newport with an empty hold, fell victim to a German submarine attack when U-57 sank her en route. A tragic loss occurred that day, claiming the lives of three brave individuals. The vessel lies approximately 16.5 kilometers west of InisMor in waters measuring 71.5 meters deep at latitude 51.58 and longitude -8.26.
