On December 22nd, 1917, the British steamer SS Colemere, on a voyage from Penarth to Sierra Leone with general cargo, was sunk by the German submarine U-105 (Friedrich Strackerjan), 35 miles W from the Smalls, St George Channel. 4 persons were killed.
