This is a draft model of the SS City of Launceston, which met its demise in 1865 after being struck by the SS Penola in Port Phillip Bay. The damage was severe and the ship took on water at an alarming rate, eventually sinking upright onto the seafloor where it remains today. The wreck lay undisturbed for over a century before being rediscovered in 1980. This momentous event marked a significant turning point in history as the SS City of Launceston became the first vessel to be protected under the Historic Shipwrecks Act in Victoria, ensuring its legacy would live on for generations to come.
