The Charleston SS was a 1,866-ton British merchant ship with defensive capabilities. On December 12, 1917, it was seized by the German submarine UB-65 while traveling 30 miles west of the Smalls in Wales. The ship was then destroyed by bombs as it journeyed from Cardiff to Berehaven, carrying a cargo of coal. Two gunners were taken prisoner during the incident. The wreckage lies approximately 60 kilometers south of Carnsore Point and measures 85 meters by 13 meters at a depth of 71 meters.
