The individual SRP98 9488 is a male aged between 26 and 35 years old from Period 17 dating back to 1400AD-1539AD. A macroscopic analysis revealed that he suffered severe trauma to his cranium exposing the cranial cavity as well as trauma in his lower back, with an avulsion injury in his lumbar vertebrae (L4 & L5) and thoracic vertebra (T12), along with a foot bone injury. His lower leg bones (tibiae) showed pathological changes indicating periostitis from a non-specific infection. His skeletal remains were discovered during excavations at Spitalfields market, which uncovered the remains of over 10,500 individuals between 1991 and 2007, specifically in 1999-2002. These remains date back to the medieval period on the site of St Mary Spital, an Augustinian priory & hospital founded in the 12th century that eventually became one of the largest in Europe. A comprehensive analysis was conducted on over 5,000 individuals, resulting in a publication produced by Museum of London Archaeology, Monograph 60.
