Here is a model from our archives developed by Bin Li. It prints beautifully at Z18 scale. We asked Bin Li about his background and process. Can you describe your journey as a designer? How did you get started, and what motivated you? My journey started late, in fact. I didn't begin training in art until college. In 2005, while studying computer science, a close encounter with drawing and painting opened up a whole new world for me. I decided to be an artist, driven by my passion to create and fulfill my vision. Three-D Animation and Games were the spark that ignited my creativity. I pursued this passion at Ringling College of Art and Design, where I studied Computer animation. What was the creative process like for this model? It started with eagerness to create something powerful and impactful. I pitched an idea for a prehistoric creature on a ship, inspired by a classic book in the public domain. After that, everything went smoothly. I re-read the book, gathered visual references and images of existing designs. I explored a few sketches of new designs for the submarine and squid first, then did more sketches of the overall composition and pose of the sculpture. Once my 2D sketches were approved, I began sculpting in 3D. From rough to refined, I worked until the details were perfected and ready for printing. Any background on why you chose this model? I enjoy designing creatures, and hard surface modeling is a lot of fun as well. This model offers both - a great combination! Describe any challenges you faced when getting a successful print (tricks of the trade)? The pose of the tentacles and waves caused some trouble. They required modification after test prints. What advice do you have for someone interested in designing 'one piece' prints? Test your designs at an early stage to avoid problems from arising too close to your deadline. Thanks, Bin Li! Born in China, Bin Li moved to Florida in 2008 and later pursued his passion for animation. He graduated with a BFA in computer animation in 2012, worked on animated feature films, and then made his way to New York City to work on visual effects for TV commercials and at MakerBot from 2014 to 2015.
