Squarish Branching Shape

I'm experimenting with plantGrower, a programming project I've been developing in Blender using Python. The underlying framework for this shape is generated through a simulation inspired by coral growth - specifically, it's based on diffusion limited aggregation, a process that mimics how coral forms its intricate structures. To give the skeleton some visual depth, I'm applying a rod-shaped 'metaball' to each segment of the skeletal framework.
