NOTE: Needs revision/remixing! Purpose: To check a square tube surfaces for parallel Background: I am building a precision linear delta which will use square stainless steel tube as the vertical ways. Using Whitworth's 3 plate technique I can make one side of the tubing flat, but it might not be parallel to the opposite side. This machine mounts a dial indicator so that I can measure the opposite surface's plane-ness to the flat surface I scraped. The flat surface rests on 3 skate bearings, and a spring tab in the top keeps the tubing pressed against these 3 points Vitamins needed: 1 dial indicator 1 M6x20mm bolt 2 M5x50 mm bolts 2 M8x40 mm bolts 3 608 skate bearings 6 8mm washers Construction: 1)print the 3 pieces: indicator mount, top and bottom 2)using the m8 bolts and washers, assemble the 3 skate bearings into the base 3)using the 2 m5 bolts, connect the indicator mount to the top and the base. the bolts go through all 3 pieces. 4)using the m6 bolt, secure the dial indicator to the indicator mount. 5)secure the base to a large stable workbench. Instructions for use: This is the procedure to true 3 pieces of square tubing (A,B,C) Having 4 sides (A1,A2,A3,A4,B1,B2,B3,B4,C1,C2,C3,C4) 1)Use Whitworth's 3 plate technique and a hand scraper to make sides A1,B1,C1 all flat. 2)Run A B and C through the device, with the flat (side 1) down. the dial indicator will measure the relative error between side 1 and 3 along the length of the tube. Use a hand scraper to reduce the error. 3)when A3,B3,and C3 are all parallel to A1,B1,C1, use Whitworth technique on side 3. repeat test 2 to ensure we are still parallel. Repeat steps 1-3 for sides 2 and 4. This should ensure the opposite sides are parallel, but does not ensure the tubes are square, they could be parallelograms in cross section.
