A ring is a circular band, typically crafted from metal, worn as an ornamental accessory. The term ring, standing alone, always specifically refers to the finger ring; however, when used to describe ornamentation worn in other locations on the body, the exact part of the body affected is always clearly specified - for example, earrings, neck rings, armlets, and toe rings. Rings are designed to fit snugly around or encase a particular section of the body that they embellish; thus, bands worn loosely, such as bracelets, cannot be considered rings. These ornamental items may be fabricated from almost any hard material - wood, bone, stone, metal, glass, precious stones, or plastic. Although many people wear some rings solely for their decorative value or as public displays of affluence, these adornments also serve symbolic functions related to marriage, notable achievements, high social standing or authority, membership in a group, and the like. Rings can be designed with logos or insignia that leave an impression in a wax seal, or feature a small enclosure for concealing objects. In folklore, fiction, and mythology, rings often acquire spiritual or supernatural significance.
