Welcome to Tlatelolco! As a tribute to one of Mexico City's most historic districts, we bring you a multicolor version of the Square of Three Cultures, where Aztec, Spanish Colonial, and Modern architecture blend together in perfect harmony. The oldest structures are part of the ceremonial center of the Mexica (Aztec) city of Tlatelolco, twin and neighboring city of Mexico-Tenochtitlan, the capital of the Empire. The Templo Mayor and its expansion phases are still visible right in front of the church. The next phase is the Church of Santiago Tlatelolco and the Convent of Santa Cruz de Tlatelolco. These were built in the 16th century using many stones from the Mexica buildings, clearly replacing the ancient cult with Catholicism above the ceremonial center. Lastly, the three apartment buildings are part of a larger complex spanning three mega-blocks with over one hundred housing units built in the 1960's under the leadership of Mexican architect Mario Pani. This square was also the site of a tragic event in Mexico's history when on October 2, 1968, a student demonstration was violently shut down by the government, resulting in countless deaths, missing persons, and injuries. A memorial slab commemorates this event. Also, several buildings collapsed or were damaged during the 1985 earthquake, marking yet another tragedy at the location.
