History Sputnik 1 was launched by the Soviet Union on October 4, 1957, becoming the first artificial satellite to be put into geocentric orbit. It marked the beginning of the Sputnik program as the first satellite. The satellite helped identify high atmospheric layers' density through its orbit change and provided data on radio-signal distribution in the ionosphere. Filled with pressurized nitrogen, Sputnik 1 also enabled the detection of meteorites by monitoring internal pressure losses due to meteoroid penetration of the outer surface. The announcement of Sputnik 1's success sparked a crisis in the United States and ignited the Space Race within the Cold War.
