A gear or cogwheel is a rotational component featuring cut teeth, or cogs, that engage with another toothed part for torque transmission. Typically, one gear has identical shaped teeth and the other gear may have a similar shape or width. Gears working together form a transmission, offering mechanical advantage via a gear ratio and classifying as a simple machine. Geared devices alter power source speed, torque, and direction; most commonly gears mesh with each other, but they can also interact with stationary toothed parts called racks, resulting in translation rather than rotation.
